Small bathrooms seem to be a normalcy of life.  It's amazing that an area that contains so much function and frequent activity can be so small, yet so useful!

You should know by now that just because any space in your home is small doesn't mean it's a lost cause.  We have several great ideas for how to design a small bathroom and even create the illusion of more space – if that's what you're after. Take a look at these top tips…

Removing barriers

A small bathroom is typically better treated as an open-concept space. Think about the barriers in a bathroom – shower door, accent walls, bath tub, to name just a couple. All of these devices create unwanted barriers that can make your space look even smaller.

This bathroom is small and narrow, yet the minimalist approach and transparent glass shower creates an open and hygienic looking space!

Focus on the tub

Bath tubs are unfortunately becoming harder and harder to find – especially in Europe and several other areas of the world. However, they are great for relaxation and can also be a design focal point of your bathroom.

Consider claw foot tubs, vintage and retro inspired metallic tubs, or tubs that combine several functions (we'll discuss this below in more detail!)

Combine the bath and shower

Combining items and functions is your best bet in both a small home and a small bathroom.

This bathroom has a mini-shower on the right-hand side, yet the tub also contains a shower function so you can stand-up and spray-off on the go!  This can save a lot of wall space and on any plumbing, too.

When your bathroom is also your utility room

A pretty common occurrence is that the bathroom may be combined with the utility room. There is nothing wrong with a great use of space and this is one of those techniques.  To keep the design and style of your bathroom on-par, purchase and install a washer or dryer that matches seamlessly with the look of your bathroom.

At first glance, you can't even see the washer in this bathroom, as the the white perfectly matches the rest of the cabinetry. Who says you can't combine space and achieve a great look too? This bathroom/utility room combination has some great design elements and efficient functions!

Simple and sleek

Sleek minimalism is one of the easiest ways to achieve an open, clean and organised look in smaller bathrooms. Keep colours within the muted neutral scheme or stick with stainless steel and wood.

Stainless steel will be easy to clean and if you have a combined bathroom/utility space it will be easiest to match all of your appliances for a clean and modern look.

Effective wall storage

Storage is a necessary part of life and something that you should invest in and use to the fullest degree.  Just because you are not blessed with the largest of spaces doesn't necessarily mean you need to downsize or get rid of goods.

Wall storage is necessary in the bathroom to save on legroom – you don't want to take away the few square meters you have to work with!

Laundry basket and matching linens

Don't forget about the smaller details. Matching linens, shower curtains, bath mats and hand towels can give a lot of design punch to any room! Choose light, clean and interesting linens – but make sure they're not too busy or bold as this might make the space seem smaller.

There are plenty of easy, budget-friendly and even DIY projects you can do to improve your cute, small bathroom and treat it the way it deserves! Want more small bathroom inspiration and design options? Check out these six ways to get rid of stress in the bathroom!
