When we redesign our homes, the bathroom is often the last room to get a look-in.

Everything else just seems more important. The living room is where we entertain, the kitchen is where we cook up feasts for our nearest and dearest, and the bedroom is where we go for restoration and calm. These rooms always seem to take priority, but we forget that the bathroom is actually somewhere that we spend an awful lot of our day.

It's easy to see why this room gets overlooked in a remodel. Renovating a bathroom is not a cheap endeavour, and it is quite easy to add a couple of decorative elements – a new shower curtain, perhaps, or a couple of hanging plants – that take it from awful to mediocre. However, transforming your bathroom from bland to beautiful could actually be one of the most important things you do when redesigning the home. It offers a fresh new space for rest and recuperation – it's where you go to spruce up before heading out the door, and a quiet place to relax in a warm bath after a long and stressful day. Have we convinced you yet? If not, these incredible bathroom renovations sure will!

Bathroom 1 – before

This tile job probably looked super chic and up to date when it was first done, but now it just looks tired and dirty.

The clash of white porcelain, a purple toilet seat and peachy tiling made the bathroom look mismatched and badly-thought out, and the space looked smaller and tackier as a result.

WOW. What a difference! Those tacky tiles were thankfully removed and replaced by smooth, pure white walls. The colour alone worked wonders in opening up the space, a trick that was exaggerated by the addition of a large mirror.

Chrome fixtures, a marble vanity and a sleek modern bath brought this once-shabby bathroom slap-bang into the 21st century, and the inclusion of tribal woven storage baskets tucked neatly underneath the sink add a welcome burst of colour and personality.

Bathroom 2 – before

Ouch – this bathroom is painful to look at! A crusty old toilet and a badly fitted sink dominate the room, and an old shower stands forlornly in the corner… how could anyone ever feel clean after bathing in here?

The colour scheme also leaves a lot to be desired. The sickly shade of pink on the tiles hasn't been in fashion since the late 50's for good reason, and the lack of light in this bathroom left the cool cream walls looking dirty and dated. This bathroom was in need of a radical overhaul, and fast…

Thankfully, that's exactly what happened! The designers worked with the dark room to create a sleek, well-lit space in a range of dark browns and blacks.

That sad bath and shower has been ripped out to make way for dark textured slate tiles and a hyper-modern wet room set up. Those ugly pipes underneath the sink have been cleverly disguised, the toilet is neatly tucked under a shelf, and reams of extra storage have been added thanks to a jumbo mirrored medicine cabinet. We love it!

Bathroom 3 – before

Could it get much worse than this? Sure, the tiles look like they are in good condition, but that colour is horrendous and they overpower the tiny room, making it look grubby and claustrophobic.

And what's with that shower curtain? The clash of nautical blue against the burnished brown colour scheme is not working at all…

That's better! Thanks to the work of Germano de Castro Pinheiro, LDA, those ugly itty-bitty tiles have been replaced by wide, white square ones, which fit perfectly with the sleek minimal design of this revamped bathroom. There is not a pipe or fixture out of place, and each aspect of this clean, crisp bathroom plays wonderfully off the others.

The nautical blue is still present, but this time it looks contemporary and chic when juxtaposed against all of that white. This bathroom is surely a lesson that, when in doubt, paint it white!

Bathroom 4 – before

Oh dear. It turns out it CAN get worse than bathroom three – just look at this monstrosity, if you can bear it. Disgusting tiles are falling off the walls, the toilet seat is falling off, and that shower fixture does NOT look safe.

Was it possible to rescue such an appalling wreck? We'll soon see…

Bathroom 4 – after

Incredible! This epic transformation proves that, with a bit of hard work and ingenuity, it's possible to turn even the most hideously hopeless bathroom into a dream. We love the modesty of this particular room – there is no grand design concept or fancy frills, just pure style and functionality.

The recessed lighting bounces light around the space, thanks to the large mirror and reflective glass shower screen. Plenty of storage is included under the sink, and the chrome accents look amazing next to the cool, concrete shades the designers chose. See? A perfect bathroom IS attainable, after all.
