Today we are taking a look at a home designed by the German Architecture firm ZHAC, Zweering Helmus Architektur + Consulting. The home is oh-so-modern, a distinct contrast to the neighbouring buildings! Yet, in it's contrast, it manages not detract from the character of the neighborhood; rather, this juxtaposition separates and distinguishes, preserving their difference, thus strengthening their individual identities.

Let's take a look at this interesting relationship between the building and its context, and then we can take a step inside to see the stunning interior!

The street facade

The front facade is refined and striking. It is arranged in a thoughtful and sophisticated composition – almost more sculpture than house. The dark grey box features a recess at the entry with reflective glass above the door.

The reflective glass is also employed at the lower right hand corner of the facade. This is an effective way to establish a veil of privacy to the street, whilst still letting ample natural light into the interior.

Juxtaposition

The dark and boxy form, complete with jutting cantilevers, stands in stark contrast to the quaint, white form of the traditional dwelling behind it – but, so perfectly!

The two different homes are so incredibly different in style, yet they enter into a wonderful dialogue of proportions and tones. Together, they feel like part of a single, perfectly orchestrated composition. Difference can be striking – even beautiful!

Material delight

The interior is just as thoughtfully composed. The material palette is simple and elegant.

The charcoal tone found on the exterior is drawn inside through the use of natural stone, and this cool grey is complimented by warm natural timbers and bright white surfaces. The relationship between the various materials is crisp and purposeful – truly delightful!

Spatial division

The same material palette that was introduced at the entrance is carried through the various spaces of the home. In this open plan living, dining, and kitchen space the stone is employed as part of a fireplace feature, which forms a central division in the space.

The double-sided fireplace mediates the living and dining space in a subtle way. For more living space ideas, take a look here!

Into the minimal

Here, we have a closer look at the dining space and a glimpse into the achingly minimal kitchen! The timber and stone are left behind once one steps into the kitchen, and glossy white surfaces reign supreme.

Understated luxury

Last, but certainly not least, we are given a view into the bathroom – and isn't it striking! The grey stone covers not only the walls, but the floor too. A stand alone bath sits majestically in the space. The space provides absolute luxury in the most understated of ways. For more bathroom ideas, take a look here.
