Are you an animal lover? Join the club! Animals do so much to enrich our lives. Pets offer us comfort, teach us responsibility, and give us countless fond memories to last a lifetime. They also help us connect more deeply to nature, enhance our sense of curiosity, and tell us things about our own species. They are beautiful in their own right, and humans have long since used them as sources of inspiration when decorating their homes and fabricating their clothing.

Some things never change. Today there are more fun and unique ways than ever to incorporate your love for animals into the home. With all the animal-inspired options available on the market, we’re sure there’s something to fit everyone’s tastes and preferences. Here are just a few of our favourites.

Couch for animals

If you have pets, the first thing you can do is elevate their style. It can be tricky to create a well designed and sophisticated home whilst also accommodating the needs of your furry friends. A dog bed covered in fur, food bowls, worn out toys and the like can really put a damper on the aesthetic and ultimately cramp your style.

Thankfully, there are actually lots of stylish pet accessories available. Even just knowing this fact can help you to keep your eye out for some nicer things that will last longer and even enhance the look of your interior. For instance, investing in a beautiful leather dog bed like this one by Scott’s of London will help your pets feel like royalty while simultaneously adding to the look of your home. This living room is certainly better off stylistically with the help of this doggy Chesterfield!

Trees for a cat

If you have cats, on the other hand, we’re sure you already understand the importance of having a cat scratch or cat tree in the house for them to flex their claws and let off some steam. Unfortunately, the most common varieties aren’t exactly easy on the eye, particularly after your feline friend has worn it in.

With a bit of an open mind and determination, you’ll actually find that there are plenty of clever cat scratches and climbing perches that will work with your existing interior design. You could even go the more literal route and get your cats a cat tree like this one that’s made with real branches!

Disguise cables and toxic plants

Of course, your pets’ safety is a major priority in creating a pet friendly space. It’s necessary to minimise their access to cords and cables belonging to electrical appliances. This is not only due to the fact that claws and teeth can wear away at the exterior insulation and expose the dangerous electrical wiring, but also because these things are enticing enough that your pet might end up pulling at one and knocking an appliance over.

Consider adhering cables to the baseboards and around the thresholds of doors. This way they won’t be so fascinating or apparent to your animals. As for the plants, it’s important to do some research about the types of plants that are pet safe, especially with cats who have been known to chew on the leaves of plants from time to time. Some common houseplants to beware of include elephant ear, lilies, heartleaf philodendron, jade, and aloe.

Animal sculptures

The first half of our list focused on suggestions for how you can improve the look of a house with pets. Now, let’s talk about things that have nothing to do with actually having animals roaming around your home.

For those of you that don’t have any pets or those that wish to go above and beyond in creating a home inspired by animals, try adding some animal statues and sculptures to the mix. There are figurines in existence of plenty of different animals that come in all shapes and sizes. We like the idea of adding multiple smaller sculptures like this crouching cat to the home in order to make a more dynamic space.

Animal images and posters

If you’re a bit pressed for space, try taking to the walls! Lots of artwork features animals as the subject. You can find more avante garde paintings or ones that conjure up emotion in addition to depicting your favourite creatures.

Alternatively, realistic photographs of animals go wonderfully in children’s bedrooms, or they can add a bit of edginess to a room elsewhere in the home. Many children are fascinated by different wild and exotic animals, so including lifelike images of them in their bedrooms can help to stimulate their curiosity. You may also wish to include a cuter option like this doe-eyed puppy in your child’s playroom or bedroom.

Animal design

To infuse your home with a sense of love and admiration for the beauty of the animal kingdom, you can always take a less literal approach. Instead of filling your home with the real thing or likenesses of real animals, you can simply take inspiration from the patterns and colours present in nature. For instance, you can incorporate animal print print textiles into your home. You can also decorate a room within the same colour palette as the plumage on a favourite bird of paradise.

Even the shapes and structures that naturally occur in the animal world can influence your furnishings. For instance, the design of these table legs was based on the legs of a spider. There are countless ways to bring animal inspired colours, textures, patterns, and shapes into the home – you don't always need to choose the most obvious option!
