Decorating a home can be exciting and you can spend hours deciding what type of curtains to use or what colour to paint the walls. Today, we're here to help you with the latter, in particular with regards to small rooms. Some decisions are harder to make than others. Choosing the right colour for the walls of your home is one of the harder decisions. That's because the colour of the walls can have a significant impact on the room. It can affect your mood and it also gives a certain atmosphere to the room.

The colour of the walls is a major part of the colour scheme for the entire room. The size of the room also plays a part in determining what colour to use on the walls. It's more difficult to achieve a balance of colour in a small room compared with a bigger room. That's why we're here to guide you through the latest tips for wall colours for small rooms recommended by professionals.

Grey

Grey is an easy colour to use as it's a neutral colour, thus it blends well with a variety of colours easily. It allows you the flexibility to play around with colours. When used with a bright colour, grey can bring just the right balance of colour your room needs.

Light grey shades like graphite, pear and pewter are excellent wall colour choices for a small room, but so are darker shades of grey like charcoal, when combined with lighter colours. You can feel more confident to opt for darker shades of grey if the room receives a lot of natural light.

Green

Green is usually associated with a calming, peaceful atmosphere as it reminds us of nature. However, it also depends what shades of green you use – neon green is not very calming for sure. Before you decide to choose green, keep in mind that green is not as flexible as neutral colours like grey. You have to be careful what colours you combine it with or the room might end up looking quite jarring, creating an uncomfortable mood.

Some of the shades of green that are recommended for small rooms are mint, moss, fennel or emerald green because they can make the room look more spacious than it is.

Blue

Sometimes darker colours can help to create the illusion of depth in a small room, making the room seem larger. Darker shades of blue are excellent for creating just the right amount of shadow in a room to create the illusion of depth. Shades of blue such as navy, sapphire, royal and indigo are some tones that are suggested to create the shadow effect. It's best to pair the shadow (darker shades of blue) with white or with lighter shades of blue.

If you're looking to create a more calming, breezy look, go for shades like sky blue or turquoise. They have the same serene qualities as water. Lighter shades of blue are also more cooling. Whereas darker shades of blue create a more warm and cosy atmosphere.

Red

Red is often associated with high energy and passion, which can be suitable both for the nursery and the master bedroom. It also serves to make a bold statement. However red can also be classy and chic, depending on what type of shade of red is used. Generally, red is a great way to spice things up a little.

Although red is often seen as a fierce colour and many people are afraid to use it on their walls, it can actually make the room more lively and visually stimulating. Red combines well with colours such as light brown and cream the best. If you want to create a focal wall which highlights certain decorations or artwork, red is definitely one of the most eye-catching colours you can use. Darker shades of red such as burgundy and maroon can give a sophisticated and cosy feel to small rooms. Red may be a challenging colour to use, but if you get it right, it can be highly rewarding.

Yellow

The colour yellow is often associated with the sun. It creates a cheerful, positive mood and can have quite a playful personality. Yellow is warm and welcoming, so it's a great choice for the main entryway and corridors.

Yellow can also be mellow. If that's what you prefer, then try try shades like mustard, flax and ochre. Whereas, for more energetic and stimulating shades of yellow, you can try canary, lemon and amber.

Purple is not a very popular colour to use, albeit still a lovely colour to brighten up small rooms. Although purple is often associated with eccentricity, it really is not that weird. In fact some shades of purple can set quite a classy atmosphere. Lighter shades of purple such as lavender can be very relaxing and good for creativity. Brighter shades of purple should always be combined with neutral colours to balance it out, or it may seem too intense, especially for small rooms. It's best to use small amount of bright purple when you start.

Orange

Orange is also associated with the sun like yellow, but more with sunsets and sunrises. Relatively, orange has a more warm and intense feeling to it, but it can also be mellow. Orange can make a room stimulating and energetic, but it can also make a room warm, relaxing and cosy as it can have an earthy feel to it.

For small rooms which receive plenty of natural light, try shades of orange such as pumpkin, carrot and persimmon. It will give the room a gorgeous, rich hue. If there's not much natural light, it's best to avoid using dark shades of orange such as tangerine and apricot, especially for small rooms.

White

White is one of the most popular and recommended choices for small rooms so we thought we'll leave it for the very end. The colour is white is often associated with neutrality, cleanliness and minimalism. With white it's easy to lose track of space, so it makes the room seem more spacious. It also makes the room brighter. Combining white with other colours is easy as it's a very flexible colour. We highly recommend using white with some warm colours such as red or yellow to give your room that perfect balance.
