Pitch black is one of those colours that you probably associate with certain items, but when it comes to the entirety of ones home, whether it be the exterior or the interior, black seems like a no-go.  However, more and more designers and achitects are considering the design quality and beauty that black objects and homes can provide and we are most impressed.

Black is mysterious, luxurious, minimal and surprisingly clean. Whereas most people are concerned with making their home brighter and lighter, that doesn't mean that black can't be a part of your design element – and maybe you should be willing to experiment more in the minimalist, clean qualities black offers.

In this ideabook, we have combined ways for you to incorporate black into your home, whether it be smaller accessories, the ceiling, or going as far as planning a pitch black room! Our features, and more importantly, these designers, will knock you off your feet!

Paint walls & doors black

For the extreme option on this list, consider painting a single room entirely back!  Anyone who has tried this option, or at least thought about it, has probably heard the rumors that black paint is very forgiving and mistakes can be made.  We are telling you that actually this is opposite of the reality and that the darker the colours that you paint with, the more consistent and steady you should be with your hand.

What's the best part about an entirely black room? Use it as an opportunity to find industrial-style, unique lighting and let the lighter accessories in the room display themselves in a way they never could in a paler room. If you're concerned about the lack of lighting and the environment it might create, you can always use a great combination of both artificial and natural light to create a lighter atmosphere when needed. For a great dinner party atmosphere, take the advice of the designers we've featured here – what a setting!

Paint the roof black

If you can't seem to dedicate yourself to an entirely black room, then maybe start off with smaller steps. The smaller step that we're suggesting is painting the ceiling black. Ceilings are a design feature that most people forget about because you can't use decor or accessories on them, besides lighting features and hanging potted plants.

Try painting your ceiling solid black, or for some added design, use a texturised technique!  Make sure that when using black for wall or ceiling colours that you're certain it's a feature you're ready to invest in, as painting over it will require layers of primer before another colour can be painted over the top.

Replace interiors with black ones

If you want to try using black in a space where it can be more experimental and allow you to get used to it before loads of guests see it – then think about these two spaces – either your child's room or a media room, as pictured here.  The interior of a media room is the perfect place to utilize black and darker colours and it will only enhance the atmosphere!  Coloured features can include special lighting, gold embellishments or a large-scale movie screen of course!

Bedding & linens are also black

Black bedding and linens are one of the most common items on this list and also one of the easiest ways to incorporate black into your home.  We understand if this isn't an option because you've made the rest of your room black, but black bedding can be just as versatile, clean and charming as white bedding! It's all about how you look at it.

We suggest pairing your black bedding and linens with lots of fresh, mixed-print accessories and pillows as well as a perfect fresh bouquet of flowers. Particularly in a bedroom you can offset the harshness of black bedding and linens with lighter curtains and unique lighting accessories.  Give it a try, it's only bedding!

Staircase with black colour

A minimalist floating staircase is definitely the most interesting way to include black in your home.  Beautiful, clean and simple, black floating staircases can be a statement feature in your home and for a rather affordable price.  For the best results, we think using black staircases look best when contrasted with white and metal, as pictured here.

To finish off a project such as this, make sure to take the time to install floorboard lighting following up the angle of the stairs for both safety concerns and to showcase all that hard work you put in!

Add some gold for essence

For quite some time, designers, homeowners and even fashion designers have recognized the special relationship that exists between black and gold. There is something about the elemental combination of both colours that exudes luxury and high-quality design – even if you've succeeded for a fraction of the cost.

Consider high-end lighting fixtures like the ones pictured here, as well as various decor and accessories.  Finding accessories and decor that you like but can't seem to find the gold/black colour combination? That's ok! Do a quick and easy DIY project and make them yourself!
