A freshly painted wall of the house makes the home new again! After seeing the amazing result on the wall we immediately forget and forgive the long toil and frustration dealt with immense patience and restrain. But yes not before secretly making a promise to ourselves of not doing it again, at least not in the near future. Isn’t it? However, before making that promise, learn from us a few secrets to keep the sheen of the painted wall young and fresh for long. This you can easily achieve by proper monitoring of the job when being done, quality control, correct technique and proper wall treatment before putting on each layer of the paint on it. Let’s dive in and educate ourselves to make the wall paint last longer than you had thought of.

1. Cure the dampness

Check the walls for any sign of dampness or damp patch. Damp patches are because of penetration of water from external walls. This dampness will ruthlessly damage the wall paint eventually. Start the painting job by preparing the house and getting it ready for make-over. Look for any cracks on the roof or wall, both internal and external from which water is seeping to make it damp. Look for seepage near the water pipes in kitchen and bathrooms or near any water reservoir or pipes of the home. Identify and rectify the problem. Allow the dampness to dry out completely before you start the paint job. In high-rise apartments where you cannot repair the cracks on the external walls or fix the source of dampness, apply epoxy waterproof coating on the internal wall. This extra coating will reduce the water absorption by the wall and substantially reduce your problem.  Wall tiles, stones or wooden or cement sheet board cladding is an innovative and smart way to disguise the dampness of the internal wall and is an inventive substitute to the paint.

2. Checking on the health of the wall

Next step should start by checking on the health of the wall plaster. It’s the plaster on which the paint is applied. So it needs to be in good health. Check for any loose plaster. This you can do by tapping on the wall. If there is a hollow sound it means that the plaster has detached from the brick wall. Get it fixed.  Fill up the cracks and mend the loose plaster. You can also think of adding branded waterproofing solution as an additive in plaster to make the wall water-proofed. Allow the fresh plaster to dry up and ensure that it has enough time for curing, which usually takes 7-21 days to get cured. Curing is the process where water is sprinkled on the plastered wall so that it sets well and get stronger. The innovation in home materials has introduced the gypsum plaster for walls now. It is a new material for plastering the wall and can be applied directly on the brick or concrete surface. The best thing about it is that it dries up fast and wall is ready for paint within three days. It also has the quality to stretch thus protecting the surfaces and avoiding cracks on the wall.

POP makes the surface clean and clear, free of any blemishes and levels the surface making the wall perfect for paint to settle on it. Make sure that the workman sands the wall properly after applying POP.

4. Strong foundation of primer

Good coats of primer seals the wall and provide a fitting base to strongly bind the colour applied on it. The job of the primer is to hold the paint and assure that it doesn’t peels and flakes. It also increases the life and look of the walls after the final coat of paint is applied on them. The wall should be scrubbed clean properly before applying primer on it. Any traces of dirt, dust, grime or even uneven surface will lead to peeling of paints. The primer takes about 8-10 hours to dry. Let it dry before the paint is applied on it.

5. Quality of paint matters

The quality matters so don’t compromise with the quality of paints you will use. After all you are not going to paint your house every year. So go for the best that comes with at least five years of warranty against peeling, flaking, fungal growth, fading and is washable even if it is an expensive one. Acrylic emulsion is good for painting home mainly because of its durability, finesse, crack resistance, easy to clean and low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). For better result apply two coats of paint. However, allow the first coat to dry properly before applying the second coat.

6. Protecting the corners

The corners are prone to break due to accidental hits. Chipped in corners reduces the charm of the space substantially. No matter how much you coat it with colour it will still lose its sheen. It’s better if you install corner guards to prevent the damage. Protect it with wooden beading installed all along the corner keeping it in harmony with the furniture around it and make it a part of the décor.

7. Wipe it clean

Once the paint job is done, now it is the responsibility of the home owner to maintain it well for its longer life. Keep the wall clean and free from fungal infestation and dirt. Clean it regularly with damp cloth and then wipe it dry. If there is fungal infestation, scrub the area with a soft brush using the solution of chlorine bleach and water mixed in the ratio of 1:3 and then wipe it dry. Beware, if there is inferior quality paint on the wall, the layer will become thin leaving ugly patches behind. Good quality paint though expensive, it will last longer on the wall.
