Facades are a beautiful architectural detail that are an introduction to your home. You've heard the saying that first impressions are important – and this is one example! Of course, first impressions can always change, that's why it's important to take care of all areas of your home and make it one comprehensive beautification project.

Particularly for smaller homes, facades are rather inexpensive and with the plethora of substitute and experimental materials out today, your facade can give you a lot for little money.  There are a lot of things to consider before choosing a facade – for example, the area you live in, the climate of your region, the size of your home and the amount of maintenance you're willing to put in will certainly affect the type of materials you choose.

Below we have listed 7 great types of facades that are perfect for smaller homes!

Modern design

The entrance to your home is an important gesture that you're making to the world.  Modern facades are typically thought to be square, stark and bold – yet this shouldn't leave you feeling limited!  Your entrance is the first impression and first contact both you and guests will have with your personal style, so it's important to make it strong and representational of you

For a modern facade, consider both colour schemes and materials that are creative and clean. Concrete, perforated panels and sleek, transparent glass are all materials to consider for an inventive look. Make sure that whatever facade you choose works well with your landscape too! If you're building or located in the wide landscape of the country, creating a facade that echoes this width is a smart idea.  If you're in a more urban environment or surrounded by trees, choose a design like the one seen here that plays more with differentiating heights.

Lightweight facade

A lightweight facade usually means lighter materials (of course) but lighter materials that are structurally sound.  This home is a great example of how hardwood timbers (in various shades and patterns) can really make the exterior or your home look fun and even modern.

One thing to consider with more lightweight facades is that they won't include concrete or sturdy metal – this will also mean more maintenance, particularly with wood.  If you live in a warmer climate, or more tropical area, lightweight facades can be a great design technique – of course, you will naturally have issues with extreme weather and an abundance of sun exposure.

Want one of the most lightweight facades you can get? Consider glass to be your new best friend as seen here!

Minimalist design

Minimalist home facades are some of the most beautiful and experimental out there.  Luckily, more and more homeowners are attempting to try an über modern look and we love it!  For the perfect minimalist facade use different shades of concrete mixed with other materials such as raw stones and hard wood timbers.  One might think that mixing so many materials is anything but minimalist – but at the heart of minimalism is attention and appreciation of details!

This example is wonderful in it's mix of materials, differentiating heights and greenery used to offset the starkness of the rectangular structure. Minimalist facades can also be versatile in that certain areas can extended, like the foundation, for certain additions like seen here!

Heavyweight facade

If you're looking for a more grandiose or sturdy look, then stick with a heavyweight facade.  These will typically cost you more money because of the quality of the materials – but it will be a worthy investment for something that will be standing for decades to come.

Concrete, steel, plaster and stucco are all great materials to consider and depending on your colour choices, these can look extremely high quality!  If you want the most grand look (also for probably the most money) think about surrounding the bottom of your heavyweight facade and windows with marble, as seen in this example. Heavyweight facades look great in almost any environment and will make your family feel safe and secure from inclement weather and even natural disasters.

Rustic style

Some of the most cozy and beautiful facades are rustic-style!  From hardwood timbers to a beautiful mixture of woods, tiles and stucco – a rustic style home doesn't necessarily have to be stuck in the country! You have to be careful while designing your rustic-style facade to make sure it's not overdone or too eclectic.  Stick with either one, or two central building materials – such as wood and plaster or wood and stucco, and then focus on proper outdoor lighting fixtures to pull the look together.

Another important aspect of creating a perfect rustic environment is focusing on the walkway or pathway leading up to your home.  Choose great mediterranean tiles or patterned wood – make sure you're choosing the right kinds of materials and speaking with a specialist because anything outdoors needs to be well-selected and maintained.

If you're looking to save money on the pathway, choose larger tiles or segments with space between them like seen here. They can offer a more contemporary look to your rustic home!

Prefabricated facade

Prefabricated homes and facades have come a long way.  Once looked at as a more cost-effective option with limited style choices, now prefabricated facades are incredibly stylish and modern in technology. Some offer versatile style options while increasing the energy efficiency of your home, others offer versatility through mobility and allow you to change locations at the drop of a hat and take your home with you.

There are plenty of home development companies and contractors that offer pre-fabricated materials with plenty of size and style options. Don't be a homeowner that doesn't at least research this option because of your fear of it looking cheap or unstable – trust us, this is not the case!

Colonial style

Seen as the most classic option on this list, is the colonial style.  It is always important to make sure that your home has a consistent exterior and there is nothing more fresh and consistent than the colonial facade.  Usually including the classic elements such as gables, porticos and porches, colonial style facades can work in almost any environment, especially for small or large families.

With any home, it is important to spend time, effort and money on exterior landscaping – with colonial facades, this is particularly important to make sure you're guaranteeing yourself the entire package.  Shrubs, smaller trees and seasonal flowers will perfectly compliment this classic facade.
