This home might not look like much, but the story behind it will leave you open-mouthed.

Located in the oldest area of Tavernes De Valldigna, Venezuela, this house looked like most of the others on the block For years it was left neglected, unmodernised, and alone. The owners lived there, but they never bothered to update the interior. The design was the antithesis of stylish and functional – until the team at Aris and Paco Camus got their hands on the property, that is.

With a modest budget and a limited time frame, the architects managed to pull this house out of the doldrums and turn it into a home. Now it is unrecognisable. Step through the door and witness the transformation for yourself…

Before: An unassuming entrance

From the outside, this home looks bleak, boring, and totally forgettable. There are bars on the windows and sutters pulled down over the doors – not exactly inviting!

The colours are muted and the paint is chipping. This is obviously a home that has not seen much love for a very long time…

Before: Is this even a house?

Hang on a second, this is a house?! How did anyone ever live here?

During the process of remodeling, virtually all internal and external dividing walls were knocked down and removed, making way for a far more innovative layout. Here we can see how the architects used steel props to prevent the ceiling from collapsing as they worked. However, they have left the magnificent old beams in place, ready to take centre stage when the renovation is complete…

After: A dream come true

We're not joking – this is what the house looks like now. Can you believe it?! Totally modern and elegant, the new design combined a few of the old elements of the house with a bold, moody colour palette. Shades of grey and charcoal dominate the space, but the mise en scene is lightened by the bright white sofa and the pale neutral flooring.

Contemporary ideals are the name of the game, but there are a couple of nods to the opulence of bygone eras in the form of that ornate mirror and the plush rug underneath the coffee table. See – modern and traditional can coexist in harmony!

After: Come dine with me

Contemporary dining has never looked slicker. The simple black table is lit by a single chrome hanging lamp, and the seating arrangements are illuminated by two-tone black and white chairs that break up the darker shades.

Elegant flower arrangements and delicate glass vases have been carefully positioned on the semi-circular minibar, carrying the touches of extravagance through from the living room to the dining space and ensuring concept continuity.

After: Kitchen cleverness

The kitchen is situated just off the dining room, making it convenient to ferry dishes to and fro. Ultra modern and simple, the two colour kitchen is divided from the living room by glazed sliding panels, which trap the cooking sounds and smells where they belong.

A gigantic kitchen island with a white quartz countertop takes centre stage. Roomy cupboards, cookers and fridges are stacked tall, making the most of the high ceilings and adding extra storage to this already spacious kitchen.

After: Work hard, play hard

Acting as a sort of reception desk to the private areas, this slick studio is located on a mezzanine level and has everything the work-from-home professional needs to get the job done.

Shelves are stacked to the ceiling, and a roll-out filing cabinet under the desk ensures that those important papers never get lost. This luxurious space enjoys the double height of the stairs, overlooking the beautiful beige marble wall that leads down to the hallway below.

After: Sleep with one eye open

Grey and white are the leading colours in the master bedroom. The headboard of the bed is made up of two sharp panels, and is surrounded by mirrors and recessed lighting.

The dim lighting and mirrors help to visually enlarge the space, while the dark wooden floors add warmth and cosiness to what could otherwise be quite an impersonal room. It's hotel chic at its finest, and a far cry from the tatty old mess it once was.

After: The pool you've always wanted

The spacious garden was one of the saving graces of the home, but the architects went one step further by building a swimming pool smack bang in the middle. They also laid lush new turf, and designed a path that curves around the perimeter before heading back to the house. The final result left us gobsmacked.

We hope you enjoyed this transformation as much as we did. If you liked this article, check out: The remarkable transformation of a derelict apartment.
