Going out is getting more and more expensive these days. If you want to go out with friends and watch a movie or grab a few drinks, it can get pretty pricey, especially if you're in a larger group. So why not have it all the fun you've have on a night out right in your home? Well, there's one thing you could do, and that's to create a wonderfully stylish media room for you and your friends.

A media room is much more than a dark room where you can watch movies. It's a multipurpose space, of course equipped with a large television, surround sound, and cozy seating, but it's also much more social than that. Friends can come to your place to watch the big game, your family can come to listen to music and relax, and it's party central when guests visit.

If you're interested in having an awesome media room in your home, here are a few tips on how to create one.

Entertainment Area

The entertainment area is the heart and soul of your media room, and thus deserves the most attention. Needless to say, the electronics you choose are of great importance. Your television should be large enough so that all of your guests can view it from a good angle, and putting the sofa directly in front of the television will put your guests at ease knowing they don't have to strain their necks to watch the show. Surround sound is also a must. You want to be sure everyone can hear, and having surround sound gives you the perfect at-home-cinema feel.

Fluffy sofas, curtains, and carpeting are not only cozy and welcoming, but they also help to soften the reverberations from the sound system, so keep that in mind when shopping around, and a good entertainment center for your television will also hide all of those pesky cords, so the room doesn't end up looking like a tech control center.

Seating

Choosing luxurious, comfortable seating with soft cushions and blankets is ideal when creating that chill atmosphere. In media rooms, seating is generally arranged in rows, facing the screen to replicate a movie theater experience. But don't be afraid to mix things up a bit. Having seats off to the side can be functional for those in your group that are looking to socialize a little more while the rest of you enjoy what's on the big screen. Here, we see an abundance of seats, pillows, and foot rests, all designed to optimize comfort.

Cool Wall Art

Want to wow your guests? Wall art is a cool and impressive way to do that. As we see here, this giant dragon design on the wall brings energy to this otherwise average-looking room. The bright orange, yellow, and red colours on the dragon compliment the stool seats and make the room pop.

If painting something yourself is too much trouble, wall tattoos are a great way to add style to your media room without too much effort on your part.

Decorative Accessories

Decorative accessories in your media room showcase your style. You have many choices in this category, from extreme to understated. Take this room, for example. The accessories are mild, not distracting, and match wonderfully in style and colour with the decor. Pictures and wall sculptures are great accessories when you just want to add a hint of pizazz to your media room without distracting your guests from the entertainment aspect of it.

And for a little something extra – if you're looking to create a media room experience that mimics traditional cinema, many companies offer custom curtain designs for your screen, so you can unveil your movie in style, and for more practical reasons, it will also keep the dust off of it when it's not being used.

Build A Bar

Why spend all that money on drink after drink at a bar in town when you could save more money in the long run by having your own bar? A bar can add a really fantastic, fresh element to any media room.

Depending on your media room style, you can customise your bar to match. Here we have a beautiful, sleek, modern bar design, but Hawaiian style bars,, for example are also great for any party. With an in-house bar, your guests will be sure to remember their experience for many years, no matter which style you decide upon.

If constructing your own full bar is too much, try upcycling some old furnishings into something else. For example, transform an old industrial barrel into the perfect little mini-bar. Add shelves inside for your drinks and glasses, and the paint choice possibilities are endless. You can put wheels on it for easier mobility, as shown here, or you can opt out of that for an equally stylish, sedentary accessory.

Games

And what would a media room be without a few games? Adding a pool table, foosball table, a dart board, or any combination of the three is a great way to ensure you have a little something for everyone when you entertain. Each game you add to your media room provides hours of fun, and the best part is, it's social.
