As the cost of properties goes up worldwide we're seeing more and more innovative solutions to cut down on cost without cutting down on comfort. One of the most notable additions to the market has been the tiny home, especially the DIY projects of ambitious and creative architects who seek to lower cost not just by occupying small unused properties, but also by using recycled and repurposed materials, and today we have a fantastic example.

Built from two shipping containers, one on top of the other, this tiny home has everything you need in an incredibly compact package. The lower container is used for the living area, while the upper container with the bedroom is offset to create a balcony, a really unique idea that has been perfectly executed. The tiny home revolution is underway, and this project is leading the charge, so let's get a closer look!

The outside

Apart from the fact that it's probably the best use of shipping containers we've ever seen, the thing that really sets this house apart is the unique shape of the structure. With the top container placed like the cross of a T it provides a covered shelter for the area outside of the living room, meaning you can still keep the doors open when it rains. But perhaps more importantly it creates a fabulous balcony outside of the bedroom!

The rear facade

From the back you can see they've cut a circular window into the container for the bedroom, a really unique and modern idea that looks fantastic. They've also built a small garden surrounding the house with beach shrubs giving the area a tropical vibe.

The utility room

This is a really unique idea, the rear of the bottom container has been used as a utility room. Apart from keeping the noise away from the living area, it also keeps everything tidy and hidden away. With such a small home, it's crucial that the architects perfectly measure and position everything, and this is a great example of how to save space.

The living room

The entrance to the home features a small timber patio that leads in to the living room, with large glass sliding doors that can completely open the home up to the outside. The living room is small but arranged for maximum space and comfort, with a sophisticated decor due to the dark colours and hardwood floors.

The kitchen

The kitchen is an incredibly economical use of space, featuring everything you need without wasting an inch. We love that timber breakfast bar, it more than makes up for the lack of a dining room table, especially with those hanging lights giving the area a warm and intimate ambience. The reflective tile mosaic is another great idea, injecting the decor with a little bit of fun and bouncing light around the room. Behind the kitchen you'll find the bathroom, with contemporary fittings, and a really funky mirror.

The staircase

You would never guess this staircase was in a shipping container. The vintage railings look fantastic against the timber slats they've used to decorate the interior walls, and combined with the hanging plants this feels like a secret garden!

The bedroom

This is such a cosy little bedroom it feels like a sleep out! The interior designers have decorated the back wall with recycled timber, giving this room a shabby chic charm that's enhanced by the vintage decorations on the shelf. But perhaps the best part about this bedroom is that it has access to the balcony!

The balcony

The designers of this home were all about saving money where they could, and yet they've had to make absolutely no sacrifices on style. The reclaimed park bench looks fantastic, and with a view out to the ocean we can't imagine a better spot to enjoy an evening cocktail!

What an amazing home, filled with surprises despite being a fraction of the size of a normal house! But if you'd like to check out a home that's a little more spacious then you'll love this suburban home.
