If you thought roofs aren't all that interesting and merely keep the rain from drenching you in your home, think again! Today, incredibly talented architects are consistently striving to push the boundaries of what is possible with modern home design and that's lead to some very exciting architectural developments, including funky roofs! Now as much of a stunning design feature as the main body of a house, roofs are worth a second glance and just in case you don't believe us, we've found 6 that will impress and inspire you. Take a look and prepare to realise that the sky really is the limit!

1. The invisible roof

Contemporary buildings that favour a boxy design always make a dramatic impression on observers, but now you look at one with the roof in mind, it's amazing how invisible it is, right? With a clever drainage scheme in place and cutting edge materials having been used, you don't always need a sloping surface anymore. Wow!

2. Tradition with a twist

On the face of it, this might look like a fairly standard roof, but look again! There's no tiles forming a protective barrier, but instead, metal sheeting that has been cut, folded and put in place to form an impenetrable yet beautiful membrane. We love the little dormer too, complete with fabulous triangle window, as it heightens the contemporary design and sets this build apart from its neighbours!

3. Protection with a conscience

A pitched, tiled roof, this example is not too out of the ordinary, until you take a minute to realise that with all those integral solar panels in place, this one roof most likely provides enough electrical energy to power the entire house! This is definitely where we see the future going, with homes becoming much more self-sufficient and imagine the utility savings!

4. Multi-level and magnificent

A great way to make the most of your roof space is to make it a whole lot more multifunctional. Of course, you can add solar panels, as we just saw, but to really glean some extra value, flat roofed homes can enjoy the benefit of extra 'rooms'. Roof terraces not only look great and add extra functionality to your home, they also offer the opportunity for easy maintenance, so they are worth a thought!

5. Sloping and subtle

With the great outdoors essentially becoming the garden for this home, it takes a stunning piece of architecture to overshadow the surroundings, but that's exactly what we have here. A beautiful, modern take on a traditional cabin home, the roof here is the real shining star! Gently sloping to ensure no standing water, it's the simplicity of this design that makes it so amazing and the house as natural as it is.

6. Engineered to perfection

We did promise you some spectacular roofs and we think this one is the perfect way to end our look at high-level architecture! Engineered to emulate butterfly wings, this v-shaped roof is beyond all of our expectations and makes such a dramatic impression! It's not all just aesthetics though, as the shape allows for extra space within the property too and optimum drainage. What a design!
