Only a few years ago, Kuching was a small town with a notable history and culture. But a big part of the city is growing steadily towards the future. In the process, many of the older and mostly dilapidated structures are making way for more swank residential buildings and commercial complexes. Kuching is not isolated in this trend. Worldwide we see a growing initiative of reusing old and sometimes abandoned houses to resolve some of the pressing concerns about affordable housing.

The snapshots of the five houses we are going to present you today also have a similar history. They were all past their prime and needed to be converted into comfortable dwellings for their current owners. In each of the cases, the owners sought a complete refurbishment of an existing two story building bought by them. Did they get their money’s worth? Lets find out!

1. Before: Shabby and run down

Casa Centenario’s façade was locked in the last century, seemingly in want of escape. It was shabby and dilapidated, posing a danger not only to those occupying its premises but also the passersby. The porch, guarded with caged doorways, resembled prison cells more than any residential premises.

After: Modern, bright and cheerful

The house located in Saltillo, Mexico has gone through a complete transformation in the hands of Tres Design Estudio. The owners show a clear preference for clean lines and vivacious colours.

The two car garage and the main door is now secured by a metallic trellis. Green plants deck the front yard as well as the terrace on the first floor.

2. Before: Nice, but like any other house in the neighbourhood

The exterior of this house was nice but lacked exclusivity. It was like any other home in the neighbourhood and had no special quality of its own to showcase. The hipped roof of the garage and clay tiles is typical to any house of the area and looked so boring.

After: Contemporary and radiant

Post renovation, the two storey building looks like an apt representation of the owners’ tastes and personality. It is designed in a contemporary style with blocks of differing volumes.

The white façade is accented with pink and brown tones. The ironwork on the garage and main doors are in sync with the geometrical nature of the façade.

3. Before: Commonplace and lifeless

León is a thriving city of central Mexico full of historical edifices and colourful residential buildings. But this León house showcased none of the colours of this prosperous Mexican town. Its exterior was cheerless and commonplace, just like any other house of the block. It was desperately waiting for a magical facelift.

After: All white and trendy

Flores Rojas Arquitectura responded to the needs of the present owners willing to give the house a modern and stylish makeover. The result is this stunning sculpted façade coated in a spotless white.

Its minimalist façade is in tune with the contemporary design trend. After sunset, the stylish ambient lighting brightens up its already cheery face.

4. Before: Unfashionable and ordinary

Though not in a complete run down condition, the exterior of this family residence was uninviting and monotonous. The entire structure and front garden needed reformation. The façade needed to come out of its drab and colourless existence.

After: Fashionable and modern

The house was remodelled beyond recognition. The façade lacking grace and style is a thing of a past now. It has been replaced with a modern face with cheerful décor and lively contrasts.

The two tone exterior not only looks shiny and elegant, but also thrives in the colours of Veracruz by the Gulf of Mexico.

5. Before & After: From appalling to appealing

This old house of Buenos Aires was in a poor state with an immediate need of reformation. Both the exterior and interior of the house were required to undergo considerable reworking. That it occupies a reasonably sized corner plot in a prominent neighbourhood was not perceivable from its façade.

The old structure was brought down before being replaced with a new one. Its contemporary façade, spectacular white walls and stone porch is in sync with modern time and the tastes of its present occupants. Post restructuring, the house feels a comfortable place to live in without anything to spoil its cheerful ambience.
